BUYER'S GUIDE
How to choose tanzanite: colour, carats and certificates
Choose a tanzanite as an individual stone, rather than by carat weight or an illustrative photograph alone. Request its specifications, images and documentation details. Equal weight by itself does not mean equal colour, appearance or quality.

What colour and photographs can tell you
GIA describes blue and violet hues in tanzanite that vary with viewing angle. Request images of the actual stone from several sides and ask about the lighting. Also compare visible inclusions and dimensions; carat weight is not a measurement of its face-up size.
Certificates: ask about the issuer and the specific stone
Before ordering, ask for the document issuer, report number, weight, dimensions and information about treatments. If the issuer offers online verification, check the details directly with them. The word ‘certificate’ alone does not identify a laboratory or the scope of its examination.
The GIA links below are educational sources for selection and care. They do not mean that every stone offered comes with a GIA report. The specific issuer and supplied documents must be stated in the offer.
Treatments and care
GIA notes that tanzanite is routinely heat-treated to modify its colour. Ask about treatments of the individual piece. GIA recommends warm soapy water and advises against ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Avoid hard blows and sudden temperature changes; discuss a suitable setting for your intended jewellery with a jeweller.
